(Against) Richard Slack and Francis Miller
Presented for entertaining of diverse persons in their houses who have prophaned the Sabbath by gaming, piping, and dancing.
Today they appeared and confessed the presentment. Therefore the lord (judge) enjoined them to pay 2s for the use of the poor of the said parish of Rushton to be distributed by the church wardens, and he warned them to show the certificates undersigned by the churchwardens regarding the aforesaid payment before the next (court-day).
The date given is that of the proceedings of the court held in the parish church of Caverswall. The marginale '14' occurs here against the name of the defendant, and similarly elsewhere among some of the entries for this court. These numbers do not signal a particular type of offence, appearance, or penalty; a court fee may be recorded, but the absence of 'd.' makes certainty impossible.
