The date given is that of the proceedings of the court held at Caverswall. The marginal note 'ne extrahatur' ('don't make a copy') appears to be addressed to a junior clerk or registrar of the court. After a hearing, a copy of the set form for penance would be made for each offender ordered to do penance. Since Simon Tayler was excommunicated no copy of a penance was required for him.
