This Indenture made the ffyftenth daye of December in the Three and Thirtyth yere of the reigne of our souereigne ladye Elizabeth by the grace of god Quene of Englande ffrance and Irelande defender of the faythe &c. BetweneThomas Burnebye of watforde in the countye of Northamptonshire Esquy<..> of the one partie And Richarde Reve cytizen and glasier of London of the other partie, witnesseth that the sayd Thomas Burnebie for dyvers Consideracions hym movinge hath demysed graunted and to farme letten and by theise presentes doth demyse graunte and to farme lett vnto the sayd Rychard Reve All that Tenemente whearein one Iohn Napton deceased did latelie inhabyte and dwell sett and beinge on the Bankesyde in the parishe of St Saviour in Southwarke in the Countye of Surrey in as ample manner as the sayd Iohn Napton occupyed and enioyed the same, Togeather with the Beare garden and the Scaffoldes houses game and dogges and all other thinges therevnto apperteyninge together with the groundes nowe in the tenure or occupacion of the sayd Thomas Burnebie neare or adioyninge to the sayd Beare garden./ To have and to holde the said Tenemente and all other the premisses ‸⸢Together with the Comodyties & profittes of the game and groundes there from tyme to tyme excepting such fees as shalbe from henceforth due & payable to the maister of the said game⸣ vnto the sayde Richarde Reve his executors and assignes from the daye of the date of theise presentes vnto the ende and tearme of Seaven yeres next ensuinge and fully to be compleate and ended yeildinge and payinge therefore yerelie vnto the sayd Thomas Burnebie his executors and assignes the somme of one hundred and Twentye poundes of lawfull money of Englande in manner and forme followinge That is to saye att thensealinge of theise presentes the somme of Threscore poundes wheareof and whearewith the sayd Thomas Burnebie acknowledgeth hymself fully satisffied and payde and thereof & of euery parte and parcell thereof doth clearlie acquyte and discharge the sayde Richarde Reve his executours & administratours by theise presentes and in the feaste of the Natyvitie of St Iohn Baptiste next and ymeadyatlie followinge other threscore poundes at the sayd Tenemente and on the ffyftenth daye of December then next followinge other Threscore poundes and so from daye to daye & feaste to feaste the sayde seuerall somes in forme aforesayde. And the sayd Richarde Reve for hym his executours and assignes Covenanteth and graunteth To and with the sayd Thomas Burnebie his executours and assignes by theise presentes That he the sayde Richarde Reve his executours and assignes shall from tyme to tyme duringe the sayd tearme well and sufficientlie performe all such Covenantes & services as on the behalf of the sayd Thomas Burnebie his executours or assignes are & oughte to be performed & kepte & shall in the ende of the sayd tearme leave and yeilde vppe the saide Tenemente & other the premisses vnto the saide Thomas Burnebie his executours or assignes well and sufficientlie repayred and amended togeather with all the beares bulls dogges & other thinges conteyned in a scedule herevnto anexed or the seuerall pryzes conteyned in the sayd scedule at the eleccion & Choyse of the sayd Thomas Burnebye his executours or assignes. And the sayde Thomas Burnebie for him his executours and administratours covennteth and graunteth To and with the sayd Richarde Reve his executours & assignes by theise presentes That he the sayd Richarde Reve his executours & assignes for the yerelie rente aforesayde to be payde in forme aforesayde vnder the Covenantes services & other thinges on the behalf of the sayd Richarde Reve his executours and assignes to be performed & kepte shall or may peaceablie and quyetlie have hold possesse & enioye all the sayd premisses without any manner of lawfull lett molestacion or interrupcion of the sayd Thomas Burnebie his executours or assignes or of any other person or persons Clayminge or pretendinge any manner of estate righte tytle or intereste in or to the sayd premisses or any parte or parcell thereof And that he the sayd Thomas Burnebie his executours and assignes shall at all tymes hereafter vppon reasonable requeste to him or to them to be made duringe the space of one half yere at the Costes and Charges of the sayd Richarde Reve make such further assurance of the sayd premisses or so much therof as he lawfully may vnto the sayd Richarde Reve his executours or assignes as by the sayd Richarde Reve his executours or assignes shall or may reasonablie devysed or advysed provyded allwayes that yf defaulte be made in payment of the sayd yerelie rente and performanc<.> of the Covenantes aforesayde contrarie to the forme aforesayde, That then this presente demyse and graunte shall vtterlie voyde & of none effecte any thinge in theise presente Indentures mencioned to the Contrarie notwithstandinge In witnesse wheareof the parties aforesayde to theise presente Indentures interchaungeablie have sett theire seal<.> yeoven the daye and yere above wrytten/ 1590/

Thomas Nashe mentions Harry of Tame as well as another bear named 'great Ned' in his satirical prose work, Strange Newes, Of the intercepting certaine Letters, and a Conuoy of Verses, as they were going Privilie to victuall the Low Countries, sig E1 (1592, STC: 18377a).

This record is the indenture of a lease by Thomas Burnaby to Richard Reve, glazier, of the Bear Garden properties for seven years at £120 annually, with a schedule attached of the bulls, bears, horses and apes remaining in the Bear Garden. Reve was a citizen of London but is listed in the token books of St Saviour's, Southwark, as resident in Crown Alley in 1593 and less specifically on Bankside in 1594; see Ingram and Nelson, Token Books.
15 December 1590; English; parchment; single membrane; indenture: 430mm x 350mm, schedule: 210mm x 195mm; unnumbered; elaborated first initial 'T' for 'This,' some words in large black letters for emphasis; poor condition, deterioration due to damp (?), some loss of letters, tear in upper left centre; seal lost but tag remaining, endorsed: 'Per me Richard Reve.' Stored in a small modern cardboard box.
