Ralph Millington, clothier, was a prominent member of the parish. Like Richard Cleche, he was a founding member of the Brethren of the Mass of Jesus and a witness of the will of Henry Kelsall, a wealthy clothier who was member of the Gild Merchant and had major business interests in Southampton (Kerry, Municipal Church of St Lawrence, pp 29, 173; Slade Reading Gild Accounts, pt 1, p xlviii). He was named as one of the burgesses to the parliament held on 25 January 1503/4 and again in 1509/10 (Guilding, Reading Records, vol 1, pp 102, 112–3). He died in 1510–11 and left 5s 4d 'for the great bell at his berying, and duryng the monethe, and at the moneth mynde' (Kerry, Municipal Church of St Lawrence, p 187). He is buried in the church (Dils, St Laurence Churchwardens' Accounts, pt 1, p 57). There is no further information about his wife.
'The same William' is William Poo, under-sexton. That year he was allowed by the vicar to sell nettles from the churchyard and keep the profits (BRO: D/P 97/5/2, p 35) and was paid 14d for cleaning the churchyard at Easter. The churchwardens rendered their accounts on the feast of the Annunciation (25 March) until 1516 when they adopted the Michaelmas–Michaelmas pattern rendering their accounts on 29 September.
