  • Document Description

Record title: St John the Baptist's Churchwardens' Accounts
    Repository: BRO
    Shelfmark: D/XP 149/1/1
    Repository location: Reading

This volume was used by Elias Ashmole for his antiquarian work but then was lost. At the beginning of research for this collection, the editor wrote to all the rectors of ancient parishes in Berkshire explaining her work. In response, the Rev. D.N. Griffiths, then rector of the parish church in Windsor, undertook a search for the book and located it among the documents of the Ironmongers of the City of London in the Guildhall Library (Ironmongers 17,142). The editor consulted the book there, but it has since been deposited in the BRO.

The dating in these accounts is uncertain. The churchwardens often served for two or three years and their accounting was done at the end of their term of service with only the rendering date given.
